Exploring the Harmony of Nature and Culture: A Study of Form in Landscape Design with a Focus on Zen Gardens

Students were required to study the different types of Zen Gardens. They were introduced to three different types of Gardens. The” Karesansui” also known as the dry garden or rock garden. The “Chaniwa”also known as the tea garden. The “Tsubo” a garden suitable for a small space, an example of this, is a balcony or patio.

Some suggestions to take into account were simplicity, naturalness, asymmetry, subtlety, unconventionalness, concepts, to be kept during the design process.

Students researched for their ideas and eventually created a small model of their designs. They used a variety of materials for this project.

Later it was decided to create a large scale garden design at school based on their previous
work. Working as a team the best ideas were incorporated to create a distinct design for the
area.

Over several weeks students gradually created their unique garden.

For my small model of a Zen garden I used stones, clay, plastic plants and small wooden pieces for my pathway. After making this model I was inspired to create my own garden at home.

Saranyaphong Ruayjaroensap
I worked on creating a small model of a Zen garden at school. After working on this project, I was also inspired by my visit to England. There I came across some examples of Zen gardens as well. I now will create my own garden at home. I hope my Zen garden will help me to relax and escape stress from my school work.

Kanthee Lekhanont
I designed my Zen garden for my balcony at home. It was my first time doing this. Teacher Finola gave me lots of advice. I did the best I could and I am happy with the results.

Merab Akram
It was an exciting and enjoyable project to transform a three dimensional model of a Zen garden into an actual garden. We had so much fun getting everything together, even in the intense heat of Thailand.
